Response to 12th night

Viola's initial question to Valentine, 'is he constant? The play is set in s in Brazil. I recommend seeing it for a good laugh — especially in the second half.

Sebastian's appearance adds the confusion of mistaken identities to the comedy.

The absurd nature of his commands is, however, exposed by Viola's simple response, 'I think not so, my lord', which thereby draws the audience's attention to the foolishness of Orsino's desires.

Examiner commentary This candidate clearly knows the play very well and can range around it to develop points in relation to the extract. Even though I did not understand the language the acting made up for that it was very clear what was going on. Twelfth Night is very well directed comedy that is really enjoyable for any age group.

I think all the actors did an amazing job. Many times I have refrained from grasping her hand and proclaiming my love for her candidly, however I am merely Malvolio, the sombre, pompous, self-inflated steward, am I not? He was very good with little reactions that he cleverly made subtle but in a way that the audience still noticed.

I thought it was done extremely well. She reasons with him that Olivia may be 'abandoned in her sorrow' for example.

Twelfth night assessment

Examiner commentary This candidate clearly knows the play very well and can range around it to develop points in relation to the extract. However, with a running time of 2 hours 20 minutes I feel the interval could have been positioned at an earlier time in the performance. This all sets up the comedic confusion to come as it is Viola's determination to fulfil her master's wishes that result in Olivia falling in love with her. Meanwhile, Viola's twin, Sebastian, has been rescued by Antonio, a sea captain who previously fought against Orsino, yet who accompanies Sebastian to Illyria, despite the danger, because of his admiration for Sebastian. Each time she happened to look in the direction I stood this gave me an opportunity to admire her- every command she gave I attended to with pleasure. Moreover, the intimacy of the dialogue between Viola and Orsino, despite the presence of others on stage who are comically ignored, and despite the personal nature of the topic under discussion, could well suggest a romantic affection on the part of the Duke. Orsino describes her as having lips like 'Diane's' and a voice much like a 'maiden's organ' and in fact 'all is semblative [of] a woman's part' and yet he fails to recognise the truth of his own words. The warm lighting which was in place to give a sensation of the heat felt and endured by the characters was effective and realistic; the audience felt like they were really there with the characters. The manner in which she rushes to respond to his call when he first enters could suggest a romantic eagerness. Many times I have refrained from grasping her hand and proclaiming my love for her candidly, however I am merely Malvolio, the sombre, pompous, self-inflated steward, am I not? At this point, Viola reveals her identity and is reunited with her twin brother.

The roles were believable. The flirtatious antics of Olivia flatter Cesario, Who is in truth a character of deception Adopted by the astray sibling Viola.
